Your Plan Is Not an Experiment
Five specifications separate a real test from a decision you have already made.

After an ending, the pressure to know what is next arrives long before the answer does. So people do the reasonable thing. They wait for clarity, and the waiting becomes the year.
The way out is not a destination. It is a direction, which is simply a value you already hold pointed outward, and a direction does not require the fog to lift first. That is the whole reason it works while you are still in the fog.
Then you test it, at absurdly small scale, in front of a very small world. Five specifications separate a real experiment from a plan wearing an experiment's clothes.
It names the direction it tests. It has a smallest real action, meaning the thing itself rather than preparation for the thing. It starts within seven days. It has a verdict date already on the calendar. And it says, in advance, what would count as a signal.
Two things masquerade as experiments and neither one is. A life sentence, which needs a lease or a degree or a move, cannot be killed without ceremony, so it is not a test, it is a commitment you have not admitted to. And research, which is thirty days of reading about the thing, never makes contact with reality and will happily consume a year.
One man's first draft was open a consultancy. That is a life sentence. The version that survived was this: charge one former supplier for four hours of advice, this Thursday, verdict date the fifteenth, and the signal to watch for is whether I want the fifth hour.
He did not want the fifth hour. The experiment worked perfectly.
That last sentence is not a consolation. It is the actual mechanism. An experiment that dies on schedule has done its job, and knowing that in advance is what makes the verdict date safe to set. People who cannot bear a kill outcome do not set verdict dates, and without a verdict date there is no experiment, only a hope with a start date.
There is one more check worth running before you commit, and it takes a second. Is this toward something, or away from something? Both are allowed. Only one of them is honest about what it is, and the away ones tend to end the moment the thing you were escaping stops chasing you.
Then grade the showing up. One dated line per attempt, recording that you did it and one sentence about what the doing revealed. Not whether it went well. Outcomes wait for the verdict date, and grading them early is how people quit in week two of a thirty day run.
